Simple ways to a healthy body

This planet is bustling with humans. The next largest thing visible in this planet is probably hospitals. There are too many of them. Yet, healthcare is still a challenge.

If everything we did was right, why would we have so many hospitals? What is it we have not understood about ourselves?

There is a fundamental flaw in understanding our role and likewise there is a fundamental flaw in what a doctor is groomed to become.

I’ve lived in this body for 47 years and likewise everyone has been living in their bodies from the time their bodies were born.

Now, we need a dose of common sense, if you please!

I’m turning to the Vedas for this! According to the Vedas, I’m not the body, I’m not the mind, I’m not the senses, I’m not the thoughts, I’m not the thinker, neither I’m the one who eats, nor am I the one who digests. I’m none of these, yet I’m in all of them, alive and present.

If I’m none of these and still I’m alive and present in all of them, then, I must understand how these systems called body, mind, senses work, right? Because, if I don’t get it, I’m not sure if I’m doing it properly.

For example; if I’m not the thinker, how does thinking happen and how do thoughts get produced? Who is responsible for these thoughts then?

And where do the cravings come from? What must I eat, what I must avoid and why? When do I sleep and when do I wake up?

The sages and ancient scientists put in certain simple guidelines they called healthy living.

So, there are classifications of living such as, healthy living, evaluative living, prescriptive living, healing, surgery, recuperative healing etc.,

Healthy living comprises of daily living where a person has to perform certain physical, mental, psychological and spiritual activities to keep the body, mind and thoughts, emotions and feelings healthy. This, they called Dinacharya.

Evaluative living happens when seasonal changes occur and you have to address the changes by evaluating the changes happening in the body. For example; in summer, the body needs more fluids than solids. This is a season when thirst is felt more than hunger. You’ll have to evaluate what the body needs and provide that to the body rather than following a habit. They called this Rutucharya.

Prescriptive living is when a Vaidya steps into your life. The word Vaidya means the one who possesses the wisdom of healthy living. A Vaidya is good at suggesting you prescriptive living, with or without medication, healing, etc,.

The first step is yours, in taking good care of your body.

When fear grips you and your doctor screw it up further

A previous client of mine brought with him his brother-in-law for consultation.

I performed his Nadi Pariksha (The Sacred Science of Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnosis). I found that he had indigestion.

This means he wasn’t able to pass stools after he woke up. Further, there are several associated symptoms that symptom creates, such as palpitations, lethargy, boredom, fullness of mind, etc,. I explained to him what led him to be the way he is. I explained how he would worry and begin eating. And how he would think to himself; if I didn’t eat, I’ll die of starvation. And so, he ate everyday.

This led to a partial obstruction in his small intestines. Gas in the intestines moved upward into his abdomen and his chest. He developed discomfort, pain and bloating. He had palpitations. He was afraid. So, he approached and searched the most wide database of information, “Google”. He identified with the worst that could possibly happen to him.

Then, retaining all that information in his head, he went to a doctor and narrated his symptoms and the associated medical terms. The doctor wrote a prescription for my client which included a medicine to reduce his blood pressure, another one to maintain his heart and the third to reduce his palpitations.

When my client heard my diagnosis, he was aghast. He thought to himself; how is it possible that I’ve such a simple answer to my symptoms and I’m having to take such complex medications!

He wasn’t convinced but he accepted the fact that he was experiencing all the symptoms I had mentioned just then. After explaining that his symptoms need not be grave at all, he calmed down. The truth was that he did not even have a heart problem.

How often have you come across a situation when you’ll have the liberty to choose between what’s appropriate and what’s convenient?

His life was straight out of a movie

The other day, a principal of a reputed school called me seeking help for one of her students, a boy of 13 years. She said the boy’s parents were crying for help and that they were sitting in front of her. So, I slotted an appointment for them to come and see me the same afternoon.

The family came in. As usual the boy’s parents began complaining how their son was absenting himself from school.

I spoke to the boy in front of them. His answers were in whispers which at times I could barely hear. After about 15 minutes, I asked his parents to sit outside and had a one-to-one conversation with the boy. At first, he was hesitant. When I assured him that I don’t judge people, he began interacting.

From the hour long interaction I had with him, I realised that the boy feels unloved by his parents. He feels his parents didn’t want him. He also shared with me that he was in a hostel for two years. His story made me feel that his life was straight out of the Tare Zameen Par movie.

My interaction with the boy was almost over. I asked him to sit outside and asked for his parents to come in. When I asked his parents what they thought about their son, the father said, he wanted his son to become a doctor.

The principal had mentioned that the boy was an intelligent child and scored very well. So, I didn’t know where the problem was. And I asked the boy’s parents to continue telling me about their son. When the husband and wife started sharing information sometimes individually and sometimes together, I pieced the information together. That’s when I realised what was happening with the boy.

To make their son more studious, the parents consciously neglected him. They shared with him pictures of them with their relatives children only to get their son to be even more studious. What his parents did frustrated the boy and his mind became restless. He didn’t know where to turn to for help. He began locking himself up in his room and slept all day.

He created his comfort space. He realised he needn’t get out of his room and face the world. So, he slept all day. At night, he’d stay awake watching movies.

His parents simply didn’t get it. The father pursued his desire to make his son a doctor and put him in boarding. The first year went by. At the end of the second year, the boy refused to go back to boarding. So, they put him into this school.

I asked the boy’s mother what she felt about putting the boy into boarding and she said, she wasn’t even asked. Decision was taken by her husband.

Now that he wasn’t attending school, the father was contemplating on putting him back in boarding.

I spoke to the boy’s parents and asked them whether they were ready to lose their son! Further, I asked them what difference does it make to them with what he grew up to become! Their son was studious and responsible. I helped them see a different perspective, a different way to address the situation on hand. They saw a new possibility.

As a matter of chance I asked them, how many times have you taken your child on a holiday! They said… never.

To me, this boy was on the brink of depression. The principal had saved him in the nick of time by getting help to him.

I suggested that they first restore their love for their son and then take their son out on a picnic.

In the evening the family came and this time their daughter was also present. The father came to show himself. I performed his Nadi Pariksha. After the diagnosis, I asked him, how important is others opinion of you to you? In different words he said that was all that mattered. We had nailed the root cause of the boy’s condition.

My work with the boy’s father took more time that what I took with the boy. My work with the boy was accomplished and work with his father has just begun.

Two days later I called the principal to give an update. She answered my phone call and said I’ve done a miracle. I asked her to clarify her statement. She said, the boy has resumed school. She also mentioned that the way he wishes her a good morning reassured her that the boy was okay.

Many a time, we as parents assume that we know it all and take action which at times backfires on our children. How much do we really know? I’d like to answer this question for you… actually we know nothing. Give your children a chance. Listen to your children patiently. If you can’t do that, find someone who can help you listen to your children and also get your children back on track.

You are the best example your children can find in this world. So, be the best parent they can ever find.

He loves his job but stress gives him sleepless nights

Successful people are always outcome driven. This means, you do everything you can and will do, so that you can achieve the outcome that you have charted out to accomplish. However, this commando attitude of yours comes with its baggage of stress. And such stress can produce symptoms which can take a toll on your sleep and can create several other physical symptoms such as digestive disorders, constipation, low vitamin D3, etc. One such person came for a consultation yesterday.

My client is of 44 years and came from overseas see me. He is working in an Indian company which has its overseas operations. He is a sales and marketing professional and his efforts are generating more than 80% of his company’s total profits. He loves his job.

I performed his Nadi Pariksha and realised that his sleep was bad, he was frustrated from unending stress and it was showing on his body as improper bowel evacuation, low vitamin D3, snoring and his body ached.

I shared my observation of the diagnosis with him. He said sleeplessness was the reason why he had come. He said that his success in his job made his employers want more from him and he could not handle that stress.

His initial symptoms began with  body aches. Those days, though he had disturbed sleep, he did not feel that an issue and he used the time he was awake to accomplish his tasks on hand.

He did not realise until much later that his disturbed sleep had progressed towards sleeplessness and recently he hadn’t slept for over 3 days.

I suggested he take on a few therapies some of which will help him relax his body and mind and some others that will help him pay more attention to what his body needs so that he can quickly recover from his symptoms.

I gave him Marma Chikitsa therapy before he left and that relieved much of his stress instantly. A little effort from his side will definitely put him back on track with his grit and determination and with an added backup knowledge that will keep him stress free.

His symptoms went undiagnosed and then this happened

A lady called me asking for help regarding her son. Her son was constantly thinking. He was unable to sleep. His hands were unsteady. He had palpitations. And he was only 19 years of age.

The family had shown their son to several doctors. Some prescribed pills to reduce his anxiety while some others tried counseling him. Nothing had worked.

The lady called from Goa and requested me to come to visit them. It was after a couple of months after her call that I got a chance to go to Goa.

I visited the family. I diagnosed their son through Nadi Pariksha and realised what the problem was.

I asked the boy…”How many times do you masturbate everyday?” He answered that he masturbated at least twice daily.

That was the root cause of all his symptoms.

I gave him some therapies and suggested only one medicine that will regenerate his tissues and asked him to stop masturbating for 2 months. In a week’s time, his sleep got better. In 15 days, his hands became steady. And in 2 months, he was back in perfect health.

This is what happened to him.

Shukra is a tissue in the body that helps cells regenerate and produces reproductive tissue in both men and women. The strength of Shukra also is an indicator strength of Ojus or your life-force energy.

In our body we have seven tissues. These are called Rasa (nutrient component of food), Rakta (blood),Mamsa (muscle tissue), Meda (fat tissue), Asthi (bone tissue), Majja (marrow and nerve tissue), Shukra (reproductive and regenerative tissue), Artava (menstrual fluid in women) and Ojus (life-force). Each of the tissues also produce their by-products; by-product of Rasa is Kapha, by-product of Rakta is Pitta, by-product of Mamsa is ear wax, by-product of Meda is sweat, by-product of Asthi is nail and hair, by-product of Majja is whitish discharge from eyes and by-product of Shukra is Ojus.

Masturbating once in a while for pleasure is understandable. When you indulge in masturbating more often, loss of Shukra will weaken Kapha, Ojus, and increases Vata which excites your nerves and your mind. This causes excitation of all other tissues. Regeneration of tissues are disturbed and the body begins to lose vital life force energy.

Some of the symptoms you’ll experience are; weakness in your nerves, restless muscles, loss of fatty tissue in the body, Low back pains, pain in lower limbs, hair fall, dry skin, shivering, palpitations, anxiety, restless thinking, aggressive behavior, lack of confidence, fear, delusions, delirium, sleeplessness, insomnia, indigestion, extreme fatigue, and urine retention, to name a few.

A person who is unemployed mentally will indulge in acts such as masturbation.

The best way to live is to make judicious use of your body and mind. Your body is a tool given to use so that you can accomplish your life’s purpose. Keep your mind occupied with healthy thoughts, healthy habits and healthy attitude so that your efforts are focussed and produce appropriate results that keep your body healthy and the mind pleasant.
